13 Displays at the
2001 Christmas Meeting

The Christmas meeting was held in December - just - on the first day of the month at 17 Charterhouse Street, London. The morning was dedicated to a wide ranging display of early air mail from South and Central American countries by the well-known expert, Dr Richard Saundry, who is also the Editor of the B Ae F quarterly publication, Air Mail News. A stimulating commentary accompanied the exhibit and there was much for all to enjoy given the degree of variety of material he showed.

After a splendid lunch, once again organised by Peter Little, the London Region Organiser, the rest of the day was devoted to members’ 16 sheet displays of which no fewer than 12 were given. These included: PanAm and Subsidiary Company air crashes in the same geographical area as the morning’s show, (Ken Sanford); British South American Airways and other post-war services, (John West); “Avion Directo” and “Hasta” markings, (Ian McQueen); Glider Post, (Rolf Scharning); Seychelles air mails, (Keith Fitton); Cobham Survey and IAL First Flights, (Lawrence Kimpton);  Portugal pre-war air mails, (Tom Poynton); Kingsford Smith & Ulm flights, (Martin Smith); Switzerland/George Smith covers, (Michael Crux); Early 1941 Transpacific air mails, (Joe Roberts); Malayan crash mail, (Peter Lister);  China air mails, (Brian Asquith).

The Chairman, Brian Asquith, thanked all the exhibitors for their entertaining displays and wishes all a safe return journey home, especially those who had travelled from Cornwall and Wales for the meeting.

The South Coast Group next meet on January 19 (Foreign Air Mails from Chile; contact: 01403 732 375) and the London Group on February 2 at 107 Charterhouse Street.

Competition Winners at 2001 AGM

The Chairman of the B Ae F, Brian Asquith, welcomed over 30 members and guests to the AGM in London on May 26. After giving his report in which he thanked all the Officers and the Regional Co-ordinators for their hard work during the past year, each Officer then gave his/her report. The Treasurer, Gordon Goodwin announced that the Federation was in a strong financial position while the Editor of Air Mail News, Richard Saundry, advised that perfect binding would be reintroduced shortly. In the following election, all the current Officers were re-elected en bloc while Keith Hanman and Stuart Henderson were welcomed on to the Committee. The Chairman also expressed his thanks to Francis Kiddle who had resigned as Patron and he invited the meeting to endorse the invitation to John Field to become a Patron.

While the AGM was in progress, Ian Nutley had been judging the 2 competitions which between them attracted 10 entries. He emphasised the high quality of all entries and the difficulty he had in identifying the winners. He awarded the Air Mail Trophy to Roy Wheeler for his display of mail carried on the DH60 aircraft and the Wotherspoon Cup to Richard Saundry for his European Acceptances to 1945 for "OAT" from New York, a very close winner over Duncan Crewe's Hong Kong mail and the Horseshoe route.

After lunch, organised by Peter Little, Keith Hanman gave a display of Rhodesian Air Mails during WW II and received a number of answers to the queries he placed before the members.
In the following auction, some 400 lots were sold in a little over 40 minutes, with a strong book and supportive bidding in the room.
