Elizabeth
1 granted a patent to "certain merchants of Exeter and others of the
west
parts and of London to trade.." for a period of 10 years, but this did
not lead to any permanent settlement.
In 1618 King
James 1 granted
a charter to a company, "The Company of Adventurers of London trading
into
Africa", who in due course built a fort near the mouth of the River
Gambia
and established trade from this area.
When slave
trading was abolished
jurisdiction of the Gambia passed from the merchants (now the Royal
Africa
Company) to the Governor of Sierra Leone in 1821 and the Royal Africa
Company
was dissolved. In 1843 Gambia became a independent colony till
1866
when it became part of what was officially termed the "West African
Settlements".
In 1888 it was made a crown colony.
In 1965 Gambia was granted independence. Gambia stamps
were first
issued on 18 March 1869.
