Indian stamps were used in the three post
offices of the
Straits Settlement - Malacca, Penang & Singapore from late 1854. The Indian stamps
were originally cancelled by a dumb obliterator and their use in the
Straits Settlements can only be identified on complete covers. In 1856
standard Indian octagonal type cancels were issued: numbered "B 109"
for Malacca, "B 147" for Penang and "B 172" for Singapore. Penang &
Singapore octagonals were replaced by duplex cancels in 1863 and 1865
respectively.
